There are a few McCandless types in this section. One McCandless type is Gene Rosselin, who was the mayor of Hippie Cove. He wanted to carry out an experiment to see if modern human beings had degressed over the years. After spending around 30 years in the wild, he decided that it was impossible for modern human beings to live off the land. Another McCandless type is John Waterman. He was a crazy climber who felt the need to test his limits. He grew up in Fairbanks and everyone considering him extremely odd. He climed numerous mountains and his life was messed up because his parents were divorced. His dad basically abandoned him. He ran for the school board but lost. He eventually ran for president and got himself killed attempting to gain momentum for his party. He fell off a cliff in an extremely dangerous climb, without any gear. Carl McCunn was the most like Chris in that he went into total seclusion into the wild. He left his job to go camp in the wild, but a few stupid mistakes led to his death. He threw some spare shotgun shells into a lake and gave the wrong signal for help. He was found frozen in the tundra four months after he left for his journey. And finally Everett Ruess was also like Chris. He had a good education but wanted a life of a nomad. He was eventually found dead after potentially being stabbed or shot.
